Make money with an Automotional Fleet Risk Management programme What Car? says: slow down, save cash
• Change up from fourth to sixth and cut bills by 25% • The slower you go, the more you could save Motorists are wasting thousands of pounds on fuel because they think going fast is economical. A What Car? survey shows 62% of motorists reckon they’re driving most efficiently between 50mph and 60mph. Not true. Tests by What Car? show the economical reality is that the slower you go, in as high a gear as possible, the more you’ll save. Steve Fowler, What Car? Group editor, said: ‘Many motorists happily scout around for the cheapest fuel prices to save 2p per litre – an average of £1.20 per tankful. ‘Yet if motorists driving at 90mph on a motorway slowed to the national speed limit of 70mph, they’d save that much in around eight minutes. ‘Lowering your speed, and using a high gear, puts less strain on your engine, makes the journey more relaxing and reduces your carbon dioxide emissions. It’s a win-win and it’s never been more important’. What Car?’s research was conducted by fuel economy expert Peter de Nayer and included comprehensive testing of five cars - a Toyota Aygo, Nissan Qashqai, Volkswagen Passat, Citroen C4 Picasso and Land Rover Freelander. The research also shows that a car driven at 100mph uses roughly five times as much fuel as one travelling at 50mph. Using the wrong gear will also cost motorists plenty. A car cruising at 40mph on rural roads uses 20% more fuel in fourth gear compared with sixth. In town motorists can cut fuel bills by pulling away slowly and smoothly, changing up early and anticipating road conditions to maintain a steady speed. Yet more consolidation in DRM industryYet another driver risk management company has been swallowed up with the announcement by Drive & Survive, the market leader for over 20 years, that it is relocating its office functions to its parent Company’s headquarters. The Company was acquired by the IAM just over 3 years ago and to date it has retained its own identity, considerable brand differences and more importantly its own senior management team. However, with the announced closing of their Bloxham offices will go much of the Company’s expertise at the all important customer service and bookings level and when coupled with the losing of its senior management team over the last 6 months in Andy Neale (General Manager), Mark Edwards (Head of Training, Product and Development) & Steve Johnson (Head of Marketing & Communications) the differences between the brands must now be in doubt moving forward. Automotional founder, Paul Catlin says “This continues a worrying trend with Prodrive also being taken over up by the IAM last year and Driving Services becoming part of Drive Tech recently. There is nothing wrong with firms joining together; however, a lot of expertise is being lost in the process with big businesses thinking that they know better! I started Drive & Survive in 1985 and as we expanded we created a team of experts in the subject and not just a team of business managers. Through frustration at what is happening to the fleet risk management industry, I have launched Automotional to provide, to those companies that want it, real expertise and a management team that has a proven track record in producing results for their many clients over a 25 year period, and at sensible prices!” The Automotional Special OfferFor a limited period Automotional will provide a full fleet risk management review of your fleet completely free of charge and with no obligations.
